The Story Behind This Piece:
Embraced by the rugged, majestic mountains of the Chugoku region, where winter blankets the landscape in a deep, peaceful silence of pristine snow, northern Hiroshima Prefecture serves as the setting for this beautiful chronicle. Here stands a grand, historic estate (kominka) belonging to a prominent, wealthy farming family that has preserved the local heritage, agricultural fields, and ancestral traditions for generations since the Edo period. Behind the main residence, constructed with massive dark wooden beams and traditional white plaster walls, stands a historic storehouse (kura) with thick, protective doors that have carefully shielded exceptional family tableware and seasonal objects across the centuries. It was from a traditional cedar wooden box kept safely within the cool recesses of this storehouse in northern Hiroshima, breaking nearly half a century of quiet seclusion, that this Set of 5 Vintage Toyo Sasaki Glass Cups emerged, retaining its brilliant clarity and watery luster perfectly intact.
These magnificent, uniquely proportioned cups were manufactured during the 1970s and 1980s (the mid-to-late Showa period), an era when Japan experienced rapid economic growth and witnessed a poetic fusion of Western modern sensibilities with traditional Japanese dining customs. Crafted by Toyo Sasaki Glass, a legendary manufacturer that has long anchored the history of Japanese glassmaking, these pieces were molded using time-honored traditional "handwork" (handwork) and specialized industrial craftsmanship. The distinctive "Hakama design"—where the lower half of the cup resembles the traditional Japanese pleated trousers—features a striking, asymmetrical diagonal boundary line that effortlessly bridges mid-century abstract modern art with classical Japanese sartorial aesthetics. The highly textured, hammered-metal finish (tsuchime) embossed onto the green glass base beautifully refracts the ambient light, creating an organic appearance that looks as if a splash of fresh, cold spring water was instantly frozen into a work of art. The lady of this northern Hiroshima estate was deeply devoted to the philosophy of Mingei (Japanese folk art) and cherished objects that carried the irreplaceable warmth of human touch, yet she also possessed an exceptional eye for contemporary art. In the functional beauty and dramatic play of shadow found in this Toyo Sasaki creation, she recognized a transformative human connection and chose this five-piece set to grace her ancestral home.
During the Showa era, these Hakama-inspired cups radiated an incredible presence within the serene, shadow-filled spaces of the kominka, beautifully contrasting against the dark wooden pillars seasoned by years of hearth smoke that epitomized the aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Used primarily during the summer months to serve locally brewed chilled sake, ice-cold green tea, or a crisp glass of draft beer, the rich texture and emerald hue of the base would shift beautifully with the liquid, bringing an exquisite sense of coolness and refined hospitality to the dining table. The substantial weight of the textured lower base providing absolute stability, paired with the gently flared rim that feels natural against the lips, embodies the very essence of functional Mingei values. However, as lifestyle dynamics shifted toward the end of the 20th century, grand family gatherings became less frequent, and by the early 1990s, these cherished pieces were carefully wrapped and entrusted once more to the absolute stillness of the storehouse. Decades later, in the modern era of Reiwa, a major archival opening of the storehouse was conducted to honor the home's historic legacy, bringing these green masterpieces back into the contemporary world.
Today, the value of this vintage Toyo Sasaki cup set extends far beyond that of mere nostalgic retro tableware. The rich green gradient, which shifts elegantly from soft chartreuse to deep emerald depending on the angle of light, and the minimalist, sculptural form bring a fresh, artistic accent to contemporary vintage-modern interiors, minimalist settings, and rustic farmhouse styles alike. Perfect for elevating your favorite chilled sake or cold tea, these vessels also function beautifully as unique amuse-bouche or dessert glasses for cold appetizers and sweets, where their organic silhouettes dramatically enrich the food presentation. We invite you to welcome this unique cross-cultural heritage—where Japan's nostalgic seasonal lifestyle meets the proud artistry of mid-century glassmakers—and make this extraordinary story a beautiful centerpiece in your daily rituals and special gatherings.
