The Story Behind This Piece:

Deep within the thick, plaster-walled storehouse of a century-old traditional minka house, nestled in the mountainous region of northern Hiroshima Prefecture, a beautiful set of half-moon shaped plates emerged after sleeping through countless seasons. These vessels were crafted during the early Showa period, an era when Japanese aesthetics underwent a unique evolution and the "Mingei" (folk art) movement flourished, discovering profound beauty within practical, everyday crafts. Featuring a striking, greenish Oribe-style glaze, these semi-circular dishes are true masterpieces of handcraft. A skilled artisan of the era carefully kneaded the clay, shaped each piece, and meticulously hand-carved the delicate, wave-like or fish-scale geometric patterns across the surface. The deep blue-green gradation, the rich and tactile texture of the engravings, and the astringent rust-colored iron glaze framing the edges vividly convey the high level of skill and refined aesthetic sense possessed by the craftsman of that time.

The original owner of these plates was the master of a wealthy estate in northern Hiroshima, a residence that served as a vibrant cultural hub for the local community. Early Showa-period Japan was an exciting era that embraced Western influences while simultaneously re-evaluating the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese beauty. In this grand house, gatherings resembling elegant salons were frequently held, drawing local writers, poets, and artists. These specific dishes were commissioned to showcase special seasonal delicacies, such as salt-grilled sweetfish, freshly gathered mountain vegetables, or elegantly crafted traditional wagashi sweets. Guests would marvel at the modern composition created by the unique half-moon shape, which allowed for beautiful negative space on the table, and the deep green hue that enhanced the presentation of the food. Holding these vessels in their hands, they engaged in passionate discussions about art and philosophy. The rich lifestyle of that era, which refused to treat daily life as a mere routine and instead sought the highest beauty in everyday utensils, is indelibly etched into these pieces.

However, with the rapid economic growth and modernization of the post-war era, Japanese lifestyles underwent a dramatic transformation. As Western-style dining tables became the norm and the era of mass production and mass consumption arrived, time-consuming, hand-crafted ceramics and traditional tableware gradually receded from the forefront of daily life. As generations shifted and the pace of life accelerated, these handcrafted half-moon plates completed their initial role. They were carefully placed inside wooden boxes and stored away in the deepest recesses of the old storehouse. This was not an act of abandonment, but rather the beginning of a long slumber intended to preserve them for a future generation. Several decades passed, and recently, the opportunity arose to renovate and pass this historic minka house on to the next generation. During this process of cleaning out the storehouse, these plates were miraculously rediscovered inside their dusty wooden box, completely retaining their original, timeless brilliance.

The decision to bring these half-moon plates back into the light of day aligns perfectly with the modern global shift towards sustainability and a renewed appreciation for the intrinsic value hidden within antique objects. The traditional Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—which finds beauty in imperfection, asymmetry, and the natural variations of glaze—offers a fresh and grounding inspiration for contemporary interiors and dining. The true folk-art value of these vintage pieces lies in the human warmth and the passage of time infused within them, qualities that mechanical mass production can never replicate. In a modern lifestyle, these versatile plates can be used not only for traditional Japanese cuisine but also to serve contemporary Western appetizers or desserts, creating a sophisticated East-meets-West table setting. Awakened from their long sleep, these historical vessels are ready to enrich your daily life with a story that transcends generations and the profound colors of traditional Japanese beauty.
