The Story Behind This Piece:
This exquisite piece was discovered in a storehouse (Kura) attached to a detached wing of a historic estate in Hiroshima, a house that once played a vital role in local logistics. While the storehouse itself dates back to the Meiji era, its contents have evolved with the passing of time. This particular bowl was welcomed into the household in the 1970s, a period when Japan’s rapid economic growth had reached maturity and people began to rediscover the "warmth of hand-craftsmanship" and "spiritual abundance." During the 1970s and 80s, Mino-yaki potters moved away from the monotonous mass production of the post-war era, forging a path for "modern crafts" by reinterpreting traditional techniques like Shino and Oribe glazes through a contemporary lens. The contrast between the deep cobalt "Ruri" glaze on the rim and the earthy texture of the body is a hallmark of the sophisticated "Mingei-style" designs that were highly fashionable in urban Japan during that era.
The original owner was a local educator—a man of discipline who nonetheless embraced new cultural trends. In the stable life he achieved after the post-war recovery, he treated daily meals not just as sustenance, but as a cherished ritual. It is highly likely that he purchased this bowl at a department store's folk craft section or a local craft exhibition, drawn to its modern yet grounded form. On weekends, when the family gathered around the table, this bowl was used to serve vibrant spinach "ohitashi" or colorful seasonal fruits. Unlike the cruder forms of the early Showa period, the scalloped "Rinka" rim of this piece exhibits a calculated beauty and practical ease of use. It represents the pinnacle of functional beauty, even designed to look elegant when stacked. The owner cherished the bowl for its "fusion of novelty and nostalgia," using it regularly and with great care.
However, as the 1990s approached and lighter, more modern Western-style tableware began to dominate Japanese dining tables, this substantial Mino-yaki piece was moved to the storehouse as a "vessel for special occasions." This move was not due to a loss of value but was a temporary retreat to find its place amidst a changing era. In the cool, quiet air of the Kura, the vessel acquired a subtle patina of age; the cobalt glaze deepened in character, and the "kannyu" (crackle patterns) formed a more delicate internal landscape. The decades spent dormant in the storehouse were, in fact, a period of maturation, allowing the bowl to transition from a mere vintage utensil into an object of significant historical value.
The decision to bring this vessel out of the storehouse today stems from the family's desire to organize a vast collection of heirlooms and find them new purpose in modern life. Holding this bowl now, one can feel the unique energy of the 1970s—a decade that blended hope for the future with a profound respect for tradition. Its primary allure lies in its modern translation of the "wabi-sabi" aesthetic. The seemingly irregular drips of glaze and the visible particles of the clay are achieved through an exquisite balance of intention and spontaneity. This is a craft piece with immense "Mingei" value, reminding us of the tactile sensations often lost in our digital lives. Whether in a traditional renovated house or a sleek modern interior, this bowl possesses a commanding presence, adding a "story" to every meal. Carrying the rich memories of the late Showa era, this Mino-yaki piece now waits for a new owner to once again bring light and beauty to daily life.
