The Story Behind This Piece:

Found in a 200-year-old kura in Hiroshima, this piece once served quiet moments of tea — and invites you to continue its story.
This Mishima tea bowl was discovered in a 200-year-old kura (traditional storehouse) located in the mountains of Hiroshima Prefecture.
The storehouse belonged to a family who practiced the Japanese tea ceremony over generations. Inside, a number of bowls and utensils were carefully arranged and preserved in excellent condition.
This tea bowl was among them—used on special occasions and later stored in its wooden box, where it quietly remained for many years.
The surface of the bowl is decorated with intricate inbanka (stamped) patterns, a signature feature of the Mishima technique.
These delicate, evenly arranged motifs show that the piece was crafted and ornamented by a skilled ceramic artist with precision and care.
The glaze is a soft, bluish-gray with warm reddish tones appearing in places—natural effects created during firing due to fluctuations in oxygen and temperature inside the kiln.
This interplay between control and spontaneity gives the bowl a calm and complex visual character.
Its form features a gently flared rim and a rounded body with a relatively deep interior, making it suitable for use not only as a matcha bowl but also as a rice or side-dish bowl.
The foot ring is solid and well-formed, providing a stable and satisfying hold in the hand.
This tea bowl was actively used in tea gatherings, as documented by the family.
After each use, it was carefully rinsed, dried with a soft cloth, and returned to its box.
Through this repeated care, the surface developed a natural patina—a soft luster and a sense of quiet depth that can only be acquired through years of respectful use.
The box is inscribed with the words “Kogai Mishima Kagan” (粉外三島 華盌), and bears the artist’s name and red seal, both clearly visible.
The bowl remains in excellent condition and carries a quiet presence shaped by time.
Once held, used, and protected with care, it now stands ready to begin a new chapter—gently continuing its story in someone else’s hands.
