The Story Behind This Piece:

This exquisite Kiyomizu-yaki (Kyoto ware) Matcha Bowl has recently emerged from a long storage in the kura (earthenware storehouse) of a 150-year-old traditional Japanese house in the Hiroshima mountains.
The bowl belonged to an individual who, in the affluent 1980s, took up the Tea Ceremony as a vital hobby to balance a busy professional life. Rather than seeking out modern aesthetics, this person deliberately sought out this traditional beauty, acquiring the piece directly from Kyoto. It served as a cherished personal collection item, providing a source of "calm and tranquility" away from daily demands.
The bowl’s defining feature is the Mishima-de (inlay technique), where carved patterns are filled with white slip to create a beautiful Chrysanthemum motif. The intricate inlay features a dense band of delicate small chrysanthemums contrasting with bold, sweeping larger chrysanthemums, establishing a refined and dignified aesthetic.
Crafted from the fine ceramic clay typical of Kyoto ware, it is covered in a subdued gray-green glaze. The white inlaid patterns have gradually allowed the subtle reddish undertones of the clay and the soft vermilion blush from the firing process to seep through, cultivating a deep sense of “wabi-sabi” (austere beauty). Even within a more contemporary lifestyle, this bowl was valued for its "Mingei (folk craft)" principles and its pursuit of "beauty in utility."
The reason for its storage was a shift in the owner’s lifestyle around the early 2000s. Wishing to responsibly pass on valued items, the owner meticulously cleaned the bowl, placed it back into its original wooden box, and retired it to the depths of the kura with the hope that it might be used again someday.
Now, as the old house undergoes maintenance and the kura is cleared, this bowl has been brought back into the light. Holding the "memory of a cherished hobby and inner richness," this piece of pottery awaits a new hand. It is a living vessel, ready to embrace the green of matcha and continue developing its beautiful "keshiki" (patina) with its next owner.
