The Story Behind This Piece:

Discovered in a traditional storehouse (kura) of a 150-year-old minka (folk house) in the northern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, this set of three Ujo-bori oshibori (hand towel) trays has emerged across the boundaries of time. This region, known as Geihoku, is a land of deep snow and rugged mountains, where a culture of "cherishing objects" has been nurtured through harsh natural environments. These trays were found deep within the kura, wrapped carefully in layers of traditional sarasa cloth. They were specially commissioned from local artisans during the early to mid-Showa era (mid-20th century) for use in welcoming esteemed guests or for ceremonial occasions in this historic residence.

Ujo-bori is a traditional craft named after Okayama Castle, also known as "Ujo" (Crow Castle) for its dignified, jet-black appearance. This technique involves intricate carving on natural wood, followed by the meticulous application of multiple layers of lacquer to highlight the natural wood grain and the three-dimensionality of the engravings. These particular pieces embody the vigor of the Showa era, blending practical utility with an artistic beauty—the "Beauty of Utility" (Yo-no-bi)—influenced by the Mingei (Folk Crafts) movement championed by figures like Soetsu Yanagi.

Engraved upon these trays are four distinct designs symbolizing the seasons and the richness of the land. On one tray, the "Persimmon," an icon of the Japanese autumn, rests alongside "Mushrooms," a bounty from the forest. The persimmon has long been revered as a "lucky tree," representing longevity and household prosperity. Another tray features two "Loquats" (Biwa), signaling the arrival of early summer. Named after the musical instrument "Biwa" due to their shape, they are symbols of artistic improvement and wealth. The final tray depicts two "Kuwai" (Arrowhead tubers). Because they grow large, prominent sprouts, they are considered symbols of "successful growth" and auspicious beginnings. Notably, Hiroshima Prefecture is the leading producer of Kuwai in Japan. The choice of this motif strongly reflects the host's deep prayers for the continued prosperity of the house and the personal success of any guest who visited. The powerful lines of the hand-carving and the warm colors radiating from the lacquered finish reveal the soul and dedication poured into every stroke by the craftsmen of that time.

The former owner belonged to a family of local village headmen (shoya). During the turbulent Showa period, the master of the house used these trays to offer hospitality to travelers and relatives who sought refuge from the bitter cold. An oshibori hand towel, warmed by the hearth, would be presented on these trays; the moist, smooth texture of the lacquer provided a sense of relief to frozen hands. However, as lifestyles changed and mass-produced plastics or disposable towels became common, these genuine handcrafted items were tucked away in the kura as family treasures to be preserved for future generations.

Now, after several decades of silence, the decision has been made to release them from the storehouse. The reason is simple: in our modern world, there is a renewed longing for the spirit of "wabi-sabi" and the values of "Mingei." Having passed through an age of mass production and consumption, we are beginning to rediscover the richness of using an object for a long time and appreciating its transformation over the years. The "antique beauty" (furubi) residing in these trays is an art form created by time itself—something that a brand-new product can never replicate.

In terms of current value, this set of three transcends the category of mere tableware. The depth of the lacquer accumulated in the grooves of the carved patterns, the surface of the wood that changes its expression depending on the light, and the way the wood seems to cling to the hand when held—these represent the aesthetics of life nurtured within Japan's old folk houses. Whether used in a kura-style cafe or as an accent in a modern minimal interior, this "beauty of utility" (yo-no-bi) exudes an overwhelming presence. These pieces are masterpieces that embody the philosophy of "beauty born from the hands of nameless craftsmen."

To hold these Ujo-bori trays in your hands is to inherit the deep history of Hiroshima and the souls of the Showa-era artisans. With continued use, the luster will only deepen, carving out a new chapter of their story. Why not add the warmth of timeless tradition and the richness of Japanese craftsmanship to your daily life? This is more than a purchase; it is a bridge to a vanished era of elegance and soul.
