The Story Behind This Piece:
Nestled in the rugged Chugoku Mountains of northern Hiroshima Prefecture lies a mountain village steeped in tradition. In this region, which becomes blanketed in deep snow during the winter, there are still scattered "kominka" (old folk houses) belonging to wealthy farmers who once made their fortunes through "tatara" iron-making and agriculture. Within the warehouse (kura) of one such estate, built over 150 years ago and surrounded by cedar forests and crystal-clear streams, this "Hotarude" (Rice-grain pattern) white porcelain teapot has been quietly holding its breath behind thick plaster doors for half a century.
This teapot was born during the mid-Showa period, specifically between the 1960s and 1970s, a time when Japan, having moved past the post-war reconstruction, began to seek true richness in daily life. The people of northern Hiroshima, while possessing the strength to survive in a harsh natural environment, also cherished beauty as a way to enrich their spirits during long winter nights. This Hotarude teapot was a masterpiece, perhaps specially commissioned or carefully chosen by the family matriarch to add a touch of elegance to their mountain lifestyle.
"Hotarude" is a technique requiring extremely high-level craftsmanship, where the porcelain body is meticulously pierced and the holes filled with transparent glaze before firing. When held up to the light, these translucent sections glow faintly like the light of fireflies (hotaru), instantly transforming the everyday act of pouring tea into a phantom-like ritual. The charming floral patterns adorning the surface of this teapot were carved by hand, stitch by stitch as if by a needle, possessing a subtle flicker and a sense of human warmth that modern automation can never achieve.
The original owner was a modest and intelligent woman from a family of "shoya" (village headmen) who supported the local community. She deeply loved the teachings of "Mingei" (folk art) advocated by Soetsu Yanagi—the "beauty of utility" created by the handwork of nameless artisans. During the harsh winters of northern Hiroshima, she would serve warm tea from this teapot to her family and guests as they gathered around the "irori" sunken hearth. The contrast between the snowy landscape outside, the clean white of the porcelain, and the light shining through like fireflies provided a moment of supreme peace for those living in this rigorous land.
However, the tides of the times flowed with a cruel swiftness. With the end of the Showa era, the sunken hearths disappeared, and people's lives shifted toward greater convenience. The matriarch likely thought, "This delicate beauty is a bit too fragile for the coming age; it must be protected." With her own hands, she wrapped the teapot in soft raw silk, placed it in a custom-made wooden box, and stored it on the highest shelf of the warehouse. Since then, until today, this teapot has felt the changing seasons of northern Hiroshima from within the warehouse, quietly waiting for "its time" to come.
Now, in the Reiwa era, through the fateful event of reorganizing the warehouse, this teapot has once again appeared before us. Upon picking it up, one is first struck by its surprising lightness. What follows is the smooth, moist texture of the porcelain, which speaks of its careful storage over the years. The rattan (to) wrapped around the handle has absorbed the slight humidity and the passage of time within the warehouse, emitting a deep amber glow. This is the essence of unintended "wabi-sabi," a unique ornamentation that can only be created by the accumulation of time beyond human knowledge.
If we were to define its current value, it would be as a "window into the lost spirituality of the Showa era." It is a crystallization of culture nurtured in the serene space of an old Hiroshima folk house, combined with a respect for handwork that was not lost even amidst the fervor of high economic growth. This teapot teaches us the beauty of "stopping" in the midst of our modern, busy lives. The pure beauty of the white porcelain and the playfulness of the light-transmitting Hotarude merge into a form that represents the pinnacle of Mingei value, possessing the power to purify the heart of the viewer.
This story is not merely a reminiscence of the past. it is the starting point for a new owner to begin marking the next 50 or 100 years. When you gaze at the Hotarude patterns that change their expression with the light, you will feel the "quiet passion" that this teapot has protected within the snow-covered warehouse of northern Hiroshima. It promises a spiritual richness—an inheritance of a piece of Japanese history and aesthetic sense that goes far beyond simply owning a tea utensil.
