The Story Behind This Piece:

This singular tea bowl spent many quiet years in the kura (earthen storehouse) of a 150-year-old traditional folk house nestled in the mountainous region of Northern Hiroshima Prefecture.
It is believed to have been crafted in the early Showa period (c. 1920s-1940s), an era when the Mingei (Folk Craft) Movement began to champion the beauty found in everyday utilitarian objects.
The former owner was a local Sōhōka (prominent figure/landed gentry) who placed great importance on cultural refinement. He practiced Chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony) not rigidly, but as an essential part of daily life, favoring antique Korean ceramics (Joseon/Goryeo) and Japanese pottery that served as Utsushi (copies or interpretations) of those historical pieces. This bowl was one of the cherished items actively used during his daily tea practice and when hosting guests.
Around the 1970s, a period of significant lifestyle change, the owner advanced in age and found it challenging to use a large number of vessels daily. Driven by the sentiment "to preserve them for a future time" and "to pass on cherished items to future generations," he carefully wrapped his beloved tea utensils and placed them deep inside the kura, safe from humidity and direct light. This act was not merely storing objects; it was sealing away memories and paying respect to the beautiful artifacts.
The bowl's long slumber ended when the folk house transitioned ownership and was scheduled to conclude its role as a family residence. During the comprehensive organization of the kura, this bowl was rediscovered, emerging once again into the light. The owner's family, recognizing its subtle beauty and historical-cultural value, made the decision to release it, hoping it would find a new user who truly appreciates its worth and will care for it deeply.
The charm of this bowl lies in its deep, tranquil celadon glaze and the Yōhen (kiln transmutation) patterns, where iron in the clay has surfaced during firing. Fine Kannyu (crazing) covers the surface, sparkling subtly in the light, offering a sophisticated simplicity. The reddish-brown clay visible at the base and foot provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the cool glaze, embodying the "beauty in utility" characteristic of Mingei.
Its perfect weight, delicate rim, and stable foot convey the fusion of practical durability and the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic. This tea bowl, which beautifully highlights the vibrant color of Matcha, is ready to add a quiet, profound narrative to your new Chanoyu moments.
