The Story Behind This Piece:
Once held in quiet hands by the hearth, this ochoko shared warmth, sake, and stories — small, but deeply human.
This sake cup was discovered inside a kura — a traditional Japanese storehouse — in a quiet mountain village in Hiroshima, Japan.
The kura, built over 200 years ago, had been carefully maintained by a local family for generations. Within its thick, earthen walls, tools, seasonal items, and personal belongings had been respectfully preserved, quietly recording the passage of time.
Among them, this Bizen ware cup was found in a wooden box bearing the signature of Yuichi Yamamoto — a master potter born in 1935 and the eldest son of National Living Treasure Tōshū Yamamoto.
Accompanying documentation suggests that the piece was likely purchased during a visit to his workshop in Okayama during the 1970s.
There is no clear record of how this cup was used — whether it was a daily companion or reserved for special occasions remains unknown.
But what is evident is the care with which it was stored. The box was intact, the cup undamaged, and the storage conditions inside the kura suggest that it was kept not merely as an object, but as something meaningful.
The reddish fire marks on the surface, called hidasuki, were created by wrapping the vessel with rice straw before firing. This traditional Bizen technique results in spontaneous, one-of-a-kind patterns formed by flame and ash — never repeated, never controlled.
When held in the hand, the cup seems to carry the weight of time — not in damage or wear, but in presence. It has not just endured but waited, quietly, for decades in the stillness of the kura.
Now, it is ready to begin a new chapter in a new home.
Not simply as a sake cup, but as a vessel of care, memory, and Japanese ceramic tradition.
