The Story Behind This Piece:
Deep within the mountains of northern Hiroshima, in a region known as Geihoku—where thick mists blanket the valleys and heavy snows crown the peaks—stands a 150-year-old traditional farmhouse (kominka). From the depths of its "kura" (storehouse), protected by thick earthen walls, this exquisite sake set has finally emerged after decades of slumber. This collection, consisting of two tokuri (flasks) and two ochoko (cups), was crafted during the early 1960s, an era when the Mingei (Folk Crafts) movement still profoundly influenced daily life in rural Japan. It was a time when anonymous craftsmen poured their souls into creating "beauty in utility," focusing on the spiritual richness of everyday objects.
The original owner, a patriarch of a local forestry lineage, used this set to warm the local sake by the side of a crackling "irori" sunken hearth during the punishingly cold winters of the Chugoku Mountains. The hemp ropes wrapped around the necks of the flasks are a testament to the wisdom and kindness of the past; they provided a firm grip and protected the hands from the heat of the warmed sake. The deep, lustrous amber glaze (ame-yu) contrasts beautifully with the white slip, which depicts a simple, elegant plum blossom. In this mountainous region, the plum is a revered symbol of endurance and hope, as it is the first to bloom while the snow still lingers. On long winter nights, as the firewood popped and hissed, the family would gather around the hearth, sharing stories and sake, finding profound warmth in the tactile presence of these vessels.
The reason these pieces were eventually tucked away in the storehouse lies in the rapid modernization of the late Showa era. As lifestyles shifted toward Western-style dining and mass-produced glassware, the traditional "beauty of use" was gradually replaced. Wrapped in old newspapers and placed in a wooden box, the set was moved to the quiet corner of the kura, where time seemed to stand still. For decades, they waited in the darkness. The decision to bring them out now was born from the inevitable dismantling of the ancestral home, but it is also a fated opportunity to pass on the "warmth of handwork" to a modern world that has grown cold with efficiency.
This sake set embodies the profound spirit of "wabi-sabi"—an appreciation for the imperfect, the impermanent, and the authentic. The irregular drips of the glaze, the heavy, grounded feel of the clay that seems to breathe, and the unique patina developed over years of careful storage all contribute to its significant Mingei value. These are not merely dishes; they are vessels of memory. To hold them is to feel the silence of a Hiroshima winter and the flickering heat of an ancient hearth. In our frantic modern lives, the act of warming sake in these flasks and sipping from these cups offers a moment of peace that borders on the sacred. Having transcended time and survived the changing eras, this set, imbued with the memories of northern Hiroshima, now waits to grace the table of a new guardian who understands the soul of Japanese craftsmanship.
