This vessel was crafted during the mid-Showa period, around the 1960s, an era when traditional Japanese tea culture and the philosophy of the "Mingei" (folk art) movement—which discovered profound, healthy beauty within practical, everyday utensils—intertwined and flourished. Coated in a deep, lustrous amber and iron glaze with a dramatic streak of bluish, Namako-style glaze that evokes the image of the Milky Way across a night sky or the first light of dawn, this kensui is a true masterpiece of handcraft. A skilled artisan of the era carefully kneaded the clay, shaped its rounded form, and fired it while artfully anticipating the whims of the kiln's flames. The deep reddish-brown gradation inside, the striking contrast of colors on the exterior, and the beautiful crystallization visible near the unglazed foot vividly convey the exceptional skill and profound aesthetic sense of the master craftsman.

The original owner of this kensui was the master of a wealthy estate in northern Hiroshima, a residence that served as a vital cultural crossroads for the local community. Japan in the 1960s was in the midst of rapid economic growth; while society pushed forward toward modernization, many individuals sought spiritual solace and the essence of Japanese culture through the practice of Chado (the Way of Tea). The master of this grand house established an elegant tea room on his property, frequently inviting local writers, tea masters, and neighborhood intellectuals for formal tea gatherings or intimate, restorative moments away from daily labor. This specific vessel was chosen as an essential utensil for the tea ceremony, used to receive the water rinsed from the tea bowls. The host deeply appreciated its understated yet undeniable presence. In the soft, dim light of the tea room, accompanied by the gentle sound of water being poured into the vessel, he shared moments of quiet mindfulness with his guests, embodying the cherished spirit of Ichigo Ichie (one time, one meeting).

However, as the post-war lifestyle shifted further towards Western ideals and generations changed, the luxurious custom of preparing matcha at home gradually faded from daily life. As daily routines transformed from family-centered gatherings to efficiency-oriented individual schedules, this handcrafted kensui completed its initial role. It was carefully wrapped, secured inside a wooden box, and stored away in the deepest recesses of the old storehouse. This was not an act of permanent abandonment, but rather the beginning of a long slumber, preserving its profound beauty until an era that would once again appreciate its soul. Several decades passed, and recently, the opportunity arose to renovate and pass this historic minka house on to the next generation. During this process of clearing out the storehouse, this kensui was miraculously rediscovered inside its dusty wooden box, completely retaining its original, magnificent brilliance and powerful presence.

The decision to bring this kensui back into the light of day aligns perfectly with the modern global shift towards sustainability and a renewed appreciation for the spiritual value and wabi-sabi aesthetics hidden within antique objects. The traditional Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—which finds beauty in imperfection, asymmetry, and the unpredictable natural variations of glaze born from fire—offers a grounding inspiration for contemporary interiors and daily life. The true folk-art value of this vintage piece lies in the human warmth and the passage of time infused within it, qualities that mechanical mass production can never replicate. In a modern lifestyle, while it can certainly be used as a traditional tea utensil, its beautiful shape and rich coloration allow it to serve beautifully as a small serving bowl, a confectionery dish, a unique flower vase, or a striking interior art piece. Awakened from its long sleep, this historical vessel is ready to enrich your daily life with a story that transcends generations, adding the profound depth of traditional Japanese beauty to your living space.

Condition & Notes:
Please note before purchasing.
This is a vintage or antique item sold as-is.
Due to age and long-term storage, natural signs of wear and aging may be present, including:
* small scratches or scuffs
* fading or discoloration
* glaze irregularities or imperfections
* crackling (crazing), kiln marks, or gold wear
* slight warping or age-related changes in wooden parts
Vintage and antique items may also carry natural storage-related scents from wood, paper, lacquer, smoke, or long-term preservation environments.
These characteristics are part of the individuality, historical character, and quiet beauty that vintage Japanese items carry.
They are not flaws, but the gentle traces of time.
We kindly ask for your understanding that vintage and antique items differ from newly manufactured products.
We do our best to show all notable details in the photos, but some small imperfections may not be fully visible.
Please review the dimensions carefully before purchasing, as photos may make items appear larger or smaller depending on display settings and shooting conditions.
Please note that colors may appear slightly different depending on lighting conditions and screen settings.
Only the items shown in the photos are included unless otherwise stated.
Display stands, decorative props, or accessories used for photography are not included unless explicitly stated.
Thank you for appreciating the character and spirit of these timeworn pieces.

Dimensions:

Height: 6.6 cm (2.60 in)
Base Diameter: 7.4 cm (2.91 in)
Rim Diameter: 13.7 × 13.7 cm (5.39 × 5.39 in)
Maximum Circumference: 43.3 cm (17.05 in)
Weight: 370 g (13.05 oz)

Shipping Information:
All items are shipped from Hiroshima, Japan.
Shipping costs are not included in the product price and will be calculated and charged separately at checkout.
Orders are usually dispatched within 3–5 business days after payment is confirmed.
For shipments to the United States, we use DHL Express with full tracking and insurance.
For all other available destinations, orders are generally shipped via Japan Post EMS with tracking and insurance.
The shipping method may be changed when necessary depending on the destination, package size, service availability, and shipping conditions.
Each item is carefully packed with protective materials to help ensure safe delivery.
Estimated delivery time is approximately 7–14 business days.
